Our Process

The name “Canola” is trademarked, ensuring that only products containing no more than 30 micromoles of glucosinolates (considered harmful for livestock which consume the crushed by-product) and less than 2 percent of erucic acid (considered harmful for the heart) can be called by that name. Canody meets, and surpasses these standards because we are never satisfied with products that are just healthy “enough”.

Before Canody canola oil is transported from the pure Canadian Prairies to distributors and consumers around the world, the canola plants we carefully harvest go through a 3 1/2-month life cycle, from germination to seed production. We limit the use of herbicides in this time, and ensure we are constantly monitoring moisture levels and soil quality to produce the crops with the most health benefits.

On average canola plants, with their characteristically vibrant yellow flowers, yield 60 to 100 pods per plant. Each seed pod contains 20 to 30 round seeds which are extracted and pressed to produce the treasure they hide inside—Canody canola oil.

The crushing and refining plant where we produce Canody is 1 of only 14 in Canada. These plants have the powerful combined capacity to crush approximately 10 million tonnes of canola seed, and produces a consistent and reliable supply of about 3 million tonnes of canola oil every year.

Every canola seed we use is subject to the rigorous grading standards of the Canadian Grain Commission. Next the cleaned seeds are “flaked” by mills, in pristine facilities, to rupture their exterior seed coat, while maintaining the quality of the oil and the highest potential yield.

The flakes are cooked to thermally rupture the oil cells which have survived flaking and adjust the moisture of the flakes. The cooked canola seed flakes are then pressed by a series of expellers to extract their oil.

To ensure stability and shelf-life, the oil goes through a series of processes involving water precipitation and filtration through natural clay.

The final step in refining is deodorization. Steam distillation removes any compounds that could give the oil anything but a pleasant odour and taste.

At this point the canola oil is ready to be packaged, through our meticulous methods to preserve quality, and sold as a cooking oil with all of its nutritious, healthful benefits intact.
